How An Appliance Rebate Can Be To Your Advantage

Appliance rebate programs are offered by electrical goods suppliers in many individual states and some under the auspices of the Federal Government. These programs are designed to encourage the users of electrical appliances to switch to those that use less energy than they otherwise would. Although there is inevitably some waste in disposing of items before they are ready to be scrapped the savings in energy are believed to more than compensate for this.

The appliance rebates that are offered are a direct result of the fact that both the government and the energy suppliers can save money by not having to build new infrastructure to support extra energy use. The grid system that transports electricity across the nation can only cope with a certain amount of use. Even more worrying is the load being put on power generating stations. These use fossil fuels and their presence is finite. It is possible that in the years to come future generations may face fuel shortages, although technology is being developed to harness natural renewable energy. What is certain is that a significant reduction in energy use with no sacrifice of living standards is highly desirable for everyone.

Enter the appliance rebate program. Although the savings made in each individual household will be relatively small domestic energy use makes up a large percentage of national energy consumption because of the high number of domestic properties. The largest appliances in terms of energy use are typically those that provide heat or cooling in extreme temperatures, followed by those that are used for cooking food. The heating and cooling units use a lot of power as they are constantly on when they are needed and in some areas this can be for most of the year.

After boilers, air conditioning and cooking units, the most important need for an appliance rebate is with refrigerators. These may not appear to have a high wattage rating, but they too are switched on constantly except when they are being cleaned or serviced. There is also a larger than average potential for saving both money and energy with refrigerators because the development in technology over recent years has made them considerably more efficient. Replacing an old refrigerator with a new Energy Star model is likely to result in the use of only half as much energy as before.

It is often thought that smaller appliances will not use enough electricity to worry about being energy efficient, but this is never really true. Computers and televisions are often operating for long periods of time. Because of the fact that these appliances are used in virtually every house in the developed world a small savings translates into a large one when the overall figure for consumption is added up. These smaller products also have Energy Star ratings and can be bought with saving energy in mind. This can never take precedence over reliability, features and value for money, but it is a valid consideration.

The appliance rebate you will get may be enough to persuade you to replace your old appliance earlier than you otherwise would and this is going to save money on your energy bills as quickly as possible. In most cases you will need to buy the appliance first and then apply for the rebate through the energy supplier. The good news is that once it is purchased you will be saving on your fuel bills as well as getting the appliance rebate.
